Write It Out! How Journaling Can Help You Stay Focused

It is that time again where we make New Yeara��s resolutions about a lot of thingsa��losing weighta�� exercising morea�� volunteering, etc. We also sometimes decide that we are going to change jobs, prepare for a promotion, go back to school to get new skills, or many other career related goals. The problem is such goals usually lose momentum by March. We get into the day to day grind and forget about our long term focus. This month we will try to give you helpful tips about staying true to your dreams and realizing your goals.

I have a quote from Mahatma Gandhi on my desk. It says, a�?Action expresses priorities.a�? A great way to take action around your goals is to journal.

You may think just running through the small tasks to accomplish each goal is enough. It may be, but journaling offers a level of reflection and organization that you dona��t get just running through your a�?to doa�? list. Journals are not a play-by-play report of your day. They are a place to capture ideas, plans, and actions. Below are just a few reasons to journal about your goals.

Journaling about your goals is a helpful tool for sorting out what is going on in your mind. Taking a few minutes to sit down and write can help you find patterns, work through challenges, and focus your thoughts.   • Find inspiration. Your journal can be a source of inspiration to you in times of disappointment. When you look back to see where youa��ve been and all that youa��ve done, not only will you understand what you are truly capable of, but you may also get inspired to set bigger goals.

Other things to consider:

  • You can journal online or with a paper and pen. Choosing a beautiful notebook to write in may give you inspiration. If you have a smartphone that goes with you everywhere, online may be more convenient.
  • Journaling is not limited to simply writing words. Draw diagrams. Paste pictures. Add sticky notes.
  • You can organize your journal any way you like. Set it up by day or by topic. Use different colored pens or post-it tabs for different topics.

Whatever you do, make journaling a regular practice. Set aside five or ten minutes at the same time each day a�� when you get up, as you eat lunch, before you go to bed a�� and start journaling about your goals today!

Staying Focused With a Vision and Positive Affirmations

It is that time again where we make New Year’s resolutions about a lot of things…losing weight… exercising more… volunteering, etc. We also sometimes decide that we are going to change jobs, prepare for a promotion, go back to school to get new skills, or many other career related goals. The problem is such goals usually lose momentum by March. We get into the day to day grind and forget about our long term focus. This month we will try to give you helpful tips about staying true to your dreams and realizing your goals.

The old saying goes we believe what we see but we actually see what we believe.  Believing in yourself, being able to envision yourself living your dreams goes a long way to actualizing your goal.

In business a vision statement is a “picture” of the future state of organization.  It articulates what the company aspires to be or do.  The vision for Toyota is an example: Toyota will lead the way to the future of mobility, enriching lives around the world with the safest and most responsible ways of moving people.

What is your vision for yourself?  Can you picture what you will be doing when you achieve your vision? What will it look like? What will other people say about you? What feelings will you experience? What would the headlines read if a reporter interviewed you for the newspaper?  The ability to actually see yourself living out your vision is the first step to achieving your goals.

After you have articulated your vision, develop a vision board, a tool used to help you clarify, concentrate on and maintain focus on a particular goal. It is a graphical representation displaying images of whatever you want to be, do or have in your life.  If your vision is to own your own computer software company, you could create a vision board showing what your company will look like, where you will be working, who your clients will be and how much profit you will make.  You can continually add to your vision board as you refine your goals.  The vision board should be in plain sight so that you see it every day. You can use a cork board and cut out pictures from books and magazines or there is now vision board software you can use.

Once you have developed your vision board, you can reinforce your goals with daily affirmations. An affirmation is a short positive statement that you say to yourself, declaring you are already in the state or the place that you want to be.  Therefore, affirmations should be written and spoken in the present tense, using words that mean something to you. Affirmations should be specific, articulating what you feel, who you are and how you are.

For example here are some affirmations that one might use if their vision is to own their own computer software company:

I am a successful business owner of a computer software company.

I am creative and innovative providing the best services to my clients.

I am happy and satisfied now that I own my own company.

I am energized and passionate about my work.

I wake up every day healthy and whole, ready for new and exciting challenges.

It has been scientifically proven that positive thoughts lead to positive outcomes. Shedding negative thinking and replacing it with a positive vision and affirmations will transform your life.

How To Tell When Your Focus Is Becoming An ObsessionIt is a brand new year. The problem is such goals usually lose momentum by March. We get into the day to day grind and forget about our long term focus. This month we will try to give you helpful tips about staying true to your dreams and realizing your goals.

Work life balance has been a buzz word in the work world for a while now. With the advances of technology and our willingness to work more around the clock, it is becoming harder and harder to balance work and life. Another thing that keeps us from maintaining balance is that we sometimes focus so much on one thing that it leads to an unhealthy obsession which ultimately causes you to get out of balance.

You often hear stories of people working 80 hours per week and admitting that they have not had time to go to the doctor for a check-up.  Or those who brag about not having taken a vacation for three years. Others who are so obsessed with losing weight that they experience an injury from over exercising. Being overly zealous and singly focused on one aspect of work or life to the exclusion of other things that are important can keep you from your goals.

The key is to stay focused and balanced without letting your focus become an obsession. Here are five ways to know if your focus is really more of an obsession.

  1. The only thing you ever talk about, think about, read about is your “focus”.
  2. You know that there are other parts of your life that are being totally neglected, such as your health or family but you are not doing anything to change.
  3. Friends and family have hinted that you might be spending too much time on your “obsession” but you dismiss their concern.
  4. You are not giving the time and attention to your work responsibilities that are not related to this “focus”, and you know that your performance is not up to par.
  5. Your single focus on this particular goal affects your moods. When things are moving your forward towards the goal, you feel elated, when feel you are off track, you become depressed.

Paying attention to your mind, body and spiritual health and making sure that these three aspects are in balance will actually help you to stay focused on your ultimate goal. For example, if you neglect your health, you are more susceptible to becoming ill which will impede your ability to stay with your goal.   When any one aspect of your life is out of balance it will affect your ability to perform at your best.
